Advancement Via Individual Development (AVID)
AVID is "a program designed to prepare students in the middle who show potential for success in a college preparatory path for admission to four-year universities and colleges." AVID students meet daily, allowing students full use of the academy's resources. The program works to prepare studentsfor admission into a 4-year college/university. In their AVID class, students are influenced on the benefits of college and are therefore motivated to seek out a college education. Teachers, along with college tutors, prepare all participants for success in Honors and Advanced Placement classes, making them even more competitive in school. AVID is also meant to be a student's supportive "family" of teachers, counselors, college tutors, and their own high school peers. AVID Activities AVID is a program where students are able to participate in special events and activities, and go through many unique and enjoyable experiences. More often than not, college tutors attend the class to help students understand the material they are learning. So basically, that part of the class alone can positively affect a student's grades in all their classes. participants interact with guest speakers, learn to develop their own strategies for success, and work in extra-curricular and community events. As this class prepares it's students for college admission, they are taught how to properly apply to college, and how to choose the right one for themselves. Also, AVID participants are taken on tours of college campuses, increasing their knowledge of the universities and their courses. |
